On July 4, 1972, New York Mets ace Tom Seaver took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the San Diego Padres. After recording the first out, Padres outfielder Leron Lee singles to spoil the no-hit bid. Seaver induces Nate Colbert to hit into a game-ending double play.
The Mets win 2-0. It’s the second time in Seaver carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning at Shea Stadium. Both times — vs. Cubs (1969) and vs, Padres (1972) — the no-hitter was snapped.
